Today, there is a lot of talk about self-love and self-care. But for most of us, it may sound like a luxury and not a necessity. Many people are also not quite sure of what it means to truly love and nurture oneself. Let’s explore these two concepts and why it is so important for our general health and wellbeing.

What is self-love?

Self-love means valuing your own happiness and wellbeing. It means taking charge of your needs, not sacrificing your happiness to please others and not compensating for anything less than you deserve.

What is self-nurturing?

Often called self-care, self-nurturing simply means to take care of yourself. This requires you to spend time on yourself and your own needs. This can include taking a break to meditate, enhancing your skills by enrolling in a course, listening to music you enjoy, or cooking a wholesome meal for yourself.

But why is it important?

Self-love is the foundation that enables us to be confident, to set boundaries and to create healthy and positive relationships with others. It also allows us to practice self-care better, pursue our goals, and feel a sense of pride in who we are.

A lack of self-love can hinder our chances of developing in our personal lives and career and ultimately, our chances for success. Unfortunately, it can also lead to failed ideas, businesses, and relationships.

Caring for and nurturing yourself is just as important. It helps you to maintain a strong and positive relationship with yourself, which in turn can encourage you to transmit the good feelings to others. Only when you are able to take good care of yourself, can you take care of others.

Self-care is not selfish. When you look after yourself, you are not only focussing on your own needs, but you are also building a strong foundation to be able to look after the needs of your loved ones better. You’re transforming yourself to be the best version of yourself for those around you.

Ultimately, through self-love and self-care, those around you can also benefit from the renewed energy you exhibit.

How to improve love and nurturing for yourself

There are many ways to improve self-love and self-care. Let’s look at just a few ways that are easy to implement in your day-to-day life:

  • Spending time alone

For some people, this can be difficult but taking just a few minutes every day to be alone and to work through your own thoughts and feelings can help you to process it better.

  • Realising only you can make yourself happy

It can be hard to come to terms with realising that no amount of compliments, material things or love from others can make you happy if you don’t love yourself. This can take time, but you have to work on yourself and make sure you meet your own needs daily.

  • Accepting compliments from others and giving them to yourself

If you are an insecure person, you may struggle with seeing in yourself what others see in you. However, it is important to not overthink compliments, to accept them for what they are and to celebrate things you love about yourself.

  • Accepting that no one is perfect, and everyone has flaws

Let’s be real: We all have flaws, whether physical, psychological or emotional. No one is perfect and flaws are perfectly normal. Don’t get disheartened when you see your own flaws. Accept them first, before you start any work to improve them.

  • Forgiving yourself

Forgiveness is incredibly important in the journey to self-love. Don’t hold grudges against yourself and forgive yourself quickly for past mistakes.

  • Working on it every day

Even if you spend just five minutes every day working on improving your self-love, you will see a major difference in the long-term. But the first step is to make a conscious decision to invest in yourself.
