Every year, millions of people around the world make New Year’s resolutions in the hopes to change certain parts of their lives. But come February or March, many of us have already forgotten all about those carefully thought-out goals. This can lead to a lot of disappointment, which can make getting motivated again quite difficult. New Year’s resolutions can also lead to unnecessary stress and pressure early in the year, which serves no useful purpose whatsoever. So, how can you go into the new year with a positive mindset and stay motivated?

Focus on one aspect of your life you want to change

When we set several goals for ourselves at the same time, it can lead to us feeling overwhelmed and anxious. It can lead to us losing focus. Instead of doing this, you can think about just one part of your life you want to change and work on just that.

It is important to know that we can’t always change things in just a couple of days or weeks. Big changes take time. Therefore, it is essential to have a plan and work towards your goal in a step-by-step way.

What do you want to change?

We often feel that there are too many things we want to change or achieve, which can make us feel despondent and make it difficult to stay focused. Here is how to avoid this:

  • Make a list

List all the things you want to achieve or change.

  • Give each point a score

Think about each point and give it a score out of 5, with 5 being the most important and 1 being the least important. This will give you an idea of what areas of your life you should be focussing on, come the new year.

Your focus area can be anything. Some examples include wanting to travel more, taking a course, making more time for your family, eating healthier or paying off your debt.

A step-by-step guide

Once you have established your focus area, you can start working towards your destination. Follow this easy step-by-step guide to reach your goal:

1.Write it down

Write down your focus area and put it up somewhere you can see it every day. This will help remind you of your goal.

2.Establish the details

Try to think about ways you can reach your goal, and what you need to do it. This may be to change your routine to make time for working on it or asking your family or friends to support you.

3.Visualise

Visualising is incredibly powerful. Make time to visualise your end goal and think about how you will feel once you have reached it.

4.Take small steps

We all know the saying: ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’. And this is true for everything we take on in life. Take it day by day and don’t get despondent when you get stuck. As long as you move forward again, you are on the right path.

A new year, a new goal

The start of every new year is an exciting period. We are filled with hope for what the new 365 days will bring. But unfortunately, if we expect too much from ourselves, we can quickly become stressed and overwhelmed. To avoid this, it is much better to focus on one area of your life and see how you can change it for the better. You will feel more relaxed and better able to handle anything life throws at you.
